When Labels Suit Better Than Tape
Tape works well for long runs on uniform surfaces. Labels suit everything else.
Smaller items with curved or irregular surfaces need a die-cut shape to fit correctly. Variable information — batch numbers, expiry dates, serial numbers, QR codes — needs to change per unit or per run, which requires label print workflows rather than fixed-text tape. Complex shapes including circles and ovals are not achievable with cut tape.
Labels are also the right format when the product itself needs to carry the identifier rather than its packaging or container.
Materials Guide
Choosing the right face stock determines how the label performs in service.
Paper suits general indoor use on cardboard, plastic, or glass packaging. Uncoated paper gives a natural finish. Semi-gloss and gloss coatings improve printability and give a crisper colour result.
Vinyl is the go-to for durability. Vinyl resists moisture, oils, and physical abrasion. It conforms to curved surfaces without lifting edges. Use it for outdoor product labels, equipment asset tags, and anywhere labels face handling.
Polypropylene gives a similar durability profile to vinyl at a lighter weight. It suits food packaging and retail labels where a premium look is needed alongside moisture resistance.
Polyester is the specification choice for chemical environments and high-temperature applications. It survives solvents, autoclave cycles, and industrial cleaning agents that would destroy paper or vinyl.
Variable Data Printing
Variable data means each label carries unique information — a different serial number, batch code, QR code, or expiry date — generated during print rather than fixed in the artwork.
Applications:
- Serialisation — unique identifiers for track-and-trace, anti-counterfeit, or warranty management
- Batch coding — production batch numbers and date codes for food, pharma, and manufacturing
- QR codes — linking physical items to digital records, websites, or inspection data
- Expiry dates — auto-incremented or calendar-based dates applied per run
Variable data print is supported across flexographic, digital, and thermal transfer methods. Provide your data set or data format and we confirm the production workflow before quoting.
